The battle for New York
Eyo, it's like dat ya'll!
Recently I have been listening to a lot of hip hop. Old School as well as the contemporary artists!
The american Hip Hop world is usually devided into two different territories - the east coast and the west coast. Today I will be writing about the development of Hip Hop in New York, which is quite possibly the biggest Hip Hop city in the world.
New York City aka The Big Apple is where it all began! The earliest roots of Hip Hop can be traced back to the 1970s in The Bronx section of NYC. It was at the block parties that the Hip Hop culture we know today began to blossom. DJs began scratching and MCs began rapping over the beats. Other important elements of the Hip Hop culture included breakdancing and graffiti!
Back in the day it was influential artists such as Slick Rick, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and The Sugarhill Gang that kick started the development of Hip Hop. Today you can still hear a lot of their punchlines being used in the contemporary Hip Hop songs! Today that kind of Hip Hop is reffered to as 'Old School Hip Hop'. Old School Hip Hop is characterized as being more 'innocent', and the lyrics are often about parties and good times. Later Mobb Deep and other artists began rapping about more real stuff like the tough life in the ghetto.
In the 90s it was Notorious B.I.G aka Biggie Smalls aka Big Poppa who was 'the king of NYC'! During the 90s a feud between the west coast and the east coast escalated! More specifically between Tupac Shakur and Notorios B.I.G and their gangs. The feud ended fatally in 1996 when Tupac Shakur was murderd in a Las Vegas shootout - allegedly by Biggie's gang. In 1997 Biggie Smalls was shot dead while promoting his new album in California!
After the death of Biggie Smalls the fight for the now empty throne began. This was what started the feud between Jay-Z and Nas. The feud started when Nas failed to show up for a recording session and later Jay-Z released a song called 'The City is Mine'. Judging by the response from the critics and the main stream popularity, one must conclude that Jay-Z has won the feud and has taken over as the new king of NYC.
